Recipe Contest

One big question we have is “Where are these restaurants????”

Because Kurt, Karen, and I love great food, we’ve used a composite of some of our favorite eating and watering holes in each book in the Kurt Maxxon mystery series. These are eateries that Kurt visits during his weekend visit to the town for the Sunday race. They are cafés, diners, or restaurants with unique owners, or unique features, or just plain, damn good food. And in each book, one of them becomes a “Hangout” for Kurt that he visits frequently.

Now we’d like to offer you real-life chefs a chance to gain some recognition for your cooking skills and/or the ambiance of your eatery. We want to see your unique recipes or your eatery. If we judge your offering worthy of inclusion in one of the Kurt Maxxon mystery series books, you’ll get recognition in the Credits section of the book, and your recipe will be included in the Kurt Maxxon Cookbook being compiled right now. Your establishment will be noted on our website as one of Kurt Maxxon’s favorite eateries…

We’ll prepare, cook and judge each recipe submitted; then decide which recipes to include in the Kurt Maxxon Cookbook. All cuisines and all courses will be appropriate. The only criteria we ask are that the recipes be a favorite of your customers, extremely flavorful, and reasonably easy to prepare. After the winning recipes have been determined, we will decide which book in the Kurt Maxxon mystery series to feature the meal in.

We will notify the winners by email, and then personally visit the winners’ establishments to present the chef with a copy of the completed Kurt Maxxon Cookbook signed by Jim and Karen Overturf. All this should get you plenty of PR and advertising in the local media.

There are nine grand prizes to be won. If we choose three of your recipes, or are impressed with the ambiance of your eatery, we may use your entry as a “Hangout” for one of the Kurt Maxxon mystery series books. If we do, we’ll pay a second visit to your restaurant when the book representing your restaurant has been published for a book signing. You’ll have the opportunity to sell copies of the Kurt Maxxon Cookbook as well as the Kurt Maxxon mystery books at your counter for a handsome profit. Lucy’s, Kurt’s hangout in Masonville, is ready now. If you wish to be a part of the advertising for this book, we would request three of the following recipes: Liver and Onions with brown gravy, Country Fried Steak, a hearty breakfast, Denver Omelet and hash browns, and Grilled Ham and Cheese sandwich.

The second book, Kings Rapids, is in the editing stages right now. Birty’s, Kurt’s hangout, would require three of the following recipes: Pork Chop Pie, The Blue Ox Breakfast Special (Ham steak, 3 eggs, a mound of hash browns, 3 large buckwheat pancakes), Patty Melt (with slices of pepper jack and Swiss cheese, and smothered with onions, green and red bell peppers sautéed in blue cheese butter) served with red beans/black beans or both and tater tots/French fries or both, Pie(Blueberry, Dutch Apple, Strawberry), pancakes, cinnamon rolls, Eggs Benedict.

Other foods (at other restaurants) in the current novels are a Chili Size, Chimichangas, Frijoles, Steak Fajitas, and Cobb Salad.
